Watery eyes, sneezing and coughing. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? A few days ago, I had a cold and to make things worse my ear was also infected. Being sick is taken seriously in our family. Wait! You must think that we immediately rush to the nearest doctor. No! We try different natural remedies at home. Allopathic medicines are considered to be harmful for health.
So, free advise starts pouring in. The first thing, I hear is to put onion juice in my ear. Someone else, told me to warm sarson oil and pour it in the ear. To tell you the truth, I was not ready to put some vegetable juice or oil in my aching ear. I kept nodding to all of the recommendations coming from different directions. I knew that this pain would not go away without painkillers and antibiotics.
Some of these remedies work very well. My mother, always used honey with ginger juice and cinnamon powder to treat coughs. My grandmother, used to give "Niazbo ki ghandi" for sore throat, which was actually basil leaves juice. This remedy is quite effective but as a kid, I used to run away at the sight of it, as it is quite bitter in taste. Another aunt, used to put ground black pepper on the tip of her finger and then put it on the very end of tongue near the throat. She thought that this will cure every disease. Whenever a child falls and scrapes a knee or something similar happens the grandmothers and aunties start dropping off box fulls of badam roghan(Almond Oil). In a similar case whenever an insect attacks and bites, the victim finds itself covered from head to toe in 'Vicks". It's quite funny actually but surprisingly it really works. I used to flee from these totkas. Still trying to achieve that.
If you accidently mention to someone that you have a stomachache, different sorts of phakian, majun and churan(digestive powder) will magically appear in front of you. They will insist on feeding you these antidotes until you give in. Ispagol is a must for constipation.
My father is fond of herbal teas, joshanda and muraba(preserved fruit). He will cure almost anything with different sorts of herbs. Cardamoms, cloves, cinnamon, mint leaves, sounf and mulathi are used to make tea, which is effective for cold and cough. I should start an advisory service like Zubaida Appa.
Any sane person should visit a doctor for treatment but in our culture natural remedies are preferred. People will not visit a doctor until they are seriously ill. I think that we should use natural remedies in a limited way and consult doctor for treatment.
